Week 1: Beginnings

AR Brick Breaker Beginnings

This is the first session of MIX1, and we got introduced to the course and what is expected from us. So at the end of the session, the four of us, Daniela, Wirigina, Chunhui, and Naya decided to team up and form one group, to work on the three assignments of the semester. It will be a bit challenging for us to go through with this course, since three of us have no previous knowledge of unity, or whatsoever. But that only makes it more exciting and motivating.

At this point we tried to put up a plan, to make it possible to deliver a working AR Board Game with at least two image targets and an AR Camera using Vuforia, in just two weeks. Therefore, we decided to work during the weekend on learning the fundamentals of unity, such as how to navigate around in the editors, making simple scripts, adding 3D objects and adding components to it. So we found some online tutorials, and our teammate Chunhui also helped us get started, since he had used unity during his internship last semester.

Now it was time to discuss and find a good assignment idea, which should be feasible in just two weeks, and also covers the requirements of the assignment, and at the same time, it should be within our interests.

So we decided to try and make an AR pet game, where the player can have their pet, could be cat, dog, pokemon, etc.. and the player will feed, and take care of the pet. So we started by looking for a 3D model, in which the model should have different states, such as eating, drinking, sleeping, laughing, and etc..

However, we couldn’t find any suitable ones, so Daniela came up with another game, in which we agreed that it’s way cooler and made more sense in many ways, especially that we don’t have much knowledge in 3D models and how they transition from one state to another, or how to create our own.

So the second idea is a Brick Breaker game in which the player will use one card to hit the ball to direct it to break the bricks that uses another card as an image target. Something similar to the following image:

It is a bit far from a board game, but since we are told that we can interpret board game however we want, we found it reasonable.
